Newport

Welsh-medium Education

Welsh-medium education is available to everyone, and children in Newport have the opportunity to learn both Welsh and English.

The children in our Welsh-medium schools are able to speak both Welsh and English, and study both languages.

Over 95% of parents of children attending our Welsh-medium schools do not speak Welsh themselves, and our schools support this by providing all information bilingually.

We have four Welsh-medium primary schools here in Newport - all with an attached nursery unit and one Welsh-medium secondary school.

Becoming Bilingual

Watch Newport parents and children talk about the Welsh language.

Immersion

We currently host a Welsh-medium primary immersion unit at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon, supporting all primary aged pupils preparing for Welsh-medium education from Year 1 to Year 6. The school hosts and delivers the service on behalf of the primary schools within the Welsh-medium cluster.

Support for secondary age pupils is available directly through Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed.

From 2025, the primary immersion unit will transfer from Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon to Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Gwenlli. Primary aged pupils will spend their first term at the immersion unit within Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon, in an arrangement agreed between the Headteachers of their named school and Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon. However, an outreach arrangement will be in place that enables the pupil to attend their named school on a set day each week so that they are able to spend time at their new school with their peers.

This outreach arrangement will also enable staff to facilitate progress checks on previous immersion pupils. Secondary aged pupils access immersion facilities with gradual transition into mainstream classes as language transmission progresses.
